Leslie Robin Cook, of Qualicum Beach, B.C., was blessed with double lung transplants this February. Now, in recuperation, she is requesting assistance in paying for basic expenses not covered by her medical plan.
Leslie successfully had lung transplants on Valentine’s Day, February 14th, 2015. She has suffered since age 31 with a congenital lung disease, "Alpha-1 antitrypsin deficiency". She has been on oxygen for over fourteen years; on two oxygen bottles for the last six months. She has been unable to work since 1995. Leslie will be 51 on May 28th this year; she effectively put her life on hold for the last 20 years.
Leslie’s medication changes daily. Some pills are covered, but not all, and these can be up to $40./day. In additon to pills, Leslie has medical supplies, and living & transportation costs that fall outside the coverage of her plan. For four to five months she needs to stay in a rental apartment by Vancouver General Hospital. Leslie's recovery includes bi-weekly tests at VGH, doctor appointments, and supervision of her post-operation health.
"Alpha-1 antitrypsin deficiency" is an inherited disorder that causes lung disease and liver disease. People with alpha-1 antitrypsin deficiency usually develop the first signs and symptoms of lung disease between ages 20 and 50. The earliest symptoms are shortness of breath following mild activity, reduced ability to exercise, and wheezing. Other signs and symptoms can include weight loss, recurring respiratory infections, fatigue, rapid heartbeat, and emphysema.
