In honor of my graduation from American University this December, I want support a project championed by Casa Ruby to construct a 12-bed transitional Youth House for queer homeless youth. About 40% of young homeless individuals also identify as LGBT/queer, most of whom are rejected by their families because of their sexuality and/or gender identity. This project continues the life-changing grassroots work done by Casa Ruby here in DC. Learn more about the Youth House, here: http://on.fb.me/1rJBWgs

Why Casa Ruby? A bilinguial multicultural LGBT organization, Casa Ruby is "La Casa de Tod@s". It is everybody's home. Volunteering at Casa Ruby has fundamentally changed the way I understand community and the potential we have as individuals to stand against injustice and in support of one another. When you enter the space, you feel valued. You can be yourself without fear of shame or violence. Casa Ruby supports the most vulnerable members of our community, providing hot meals and clothing, job training and health services, support groups, housing referrals, and much-needed emotional support.

Why now? I have had the pleasuring of getting to know the fabulous Ruby and am consistently inspired by her passion and dedication, the long hours put in by her staff and volunteers, transforming D.C. and fighting for all people to live safely and authentically. By opening the transitional Youth House, Casa Ruby will be able to continue supporting the most marginalized members of our community. As mentioned, 40% of young homeless individuals also identify as LGBT/queer, and this is no accident. Queer youth, especially queer youth of color, face high rates of unemployment due to job discrimination and educational barriers due to bullying. These rates are astonishing and unacceptable, given the economic and social capital of certain LGBTQ organizations that have the ability, if not the desire, to fund queer transitional Youth Houses.

What can you do? Contribute any amount that you can! Every dollar is appreciated. Learn more about Casa Ruby by visiting their website (http://casaruby.org/index.html) or volunteering yourself. As Dr. Cornel West says, "Justice is what love looks like in public." Casa Ruby serves up a lot of both love and justice, so let's support their work and raise $1000 by the end of December.
