Yumba Special School (Tamale, Northern Region of Ghana) believes in supporting children with learning disabilities by providing life skills rather than a conventional form. It lacks resources to achieve this mission. Your support will change lives.

The Yumba Special School is located in the Tamale metropolis in Northern Ghana. It teaches children who have learning disabilities and mental health problems. It is the only school of its kind in the Northern Region of Ghana.

In Ghana, persons with learning disabilities face stigma in discrimination. They constitute an impoverished and marginalised group, characterised by a lack of access to services that would support and enable them to achieve their potential.

Yumba Special School focuses on teaching the children skills that can enable to live more independent lives and contribute to society. The school, however, is unable to fulfill this aim because of a lack of funding, proper facilities and staff capacity to cope with the number of children they teach and their disabilities.

To create a sustainable improvement at the school we need the help of people from across the world. Money raised for the school will go towards:

  • Improving the classrooms and teaching materials at the school.
  • providing the school with appropriate dining facilities. Food is currently prepared ina kitchen that is not up to appropriate standard, and the children eat outside on the walkways of the school.
