My darling friend, Janine Hummel, has been dealing with Brittle Type 1 Diabetes since 1971. She awoke after a night of severe high and low sugars with a Vitreous hemorrhage, which left her blind in her left eye. Its vision is 20/200. Her right eye has no peripheral vision and has blood across it that cannot be removed.
She purchased a Dexcom Continuous Glucose Monitor out-of-pocket, since Medicare doesn't cover it. It ran $1450. Its sensors cost $300 a month, and she began using her Medtronic insulin pump a year ago with a cost of $8,000. She did this to save her eyes from Diabetic Retinopathy.
Yet when she lifted her Puggle, Phineas, her left eye had a severe Vitreous hemorrhage. She's now had 12 surgeries on her left eye, and a Vitrectomy. Her Vitrectomy did not work.
In January 5, she got another Avastin shot in her left eye. She needs them every two months. She pays Dr. "Gnarly" $640 per visit. The next is in March.
