Cedarkeyschool Artclub hasn't added a story.
CKS art club & the Emerging Artists
The Cedar Key after-school art club began as an informal after-school art education club in 2011, entitled "Emerging Artist in Cedar Key." Although still an "informal" after-school club, this will be the second year any CKS 7th-12th graders will have access to art materials and a space to make art (open studio style) at the school. Our hopes is to finish our By-Laws and make a request to the SBLC to become a formal club. If we have enough interest and financial support, we hope to begin a club for younger students.
Why a Cedar Key after-school art club?
While living at home in Cedar Key and working on her dissertation in the field of art therapy, Alexandria "Zandy" Zettler discovered that the local K-12 school was unable to offer a music, theatre, dance, or visual arts program. She began meeting kids after school at the Cedar Arts Center. They were able to create enough art to have a show and participate in the annual spring arts festival. They were even able to paint the second street mural "Cedar Key Kids painting Kids painting a mural of Cedar Key.
During the 2013-2014 school year, Dr. Z completed her dissertation, which specifically addressed how making art with the purpose of building a personal visual vocabulary significantly increased positive self-concept (self-esteem) for all the study's participants. With the help of Shea O'Steen and Coach Chris Beckham, she offered 16 after-school art sessions and the participants held a show in downtown Cedar Key, May 2014.
Yes, we had a GREAT time and it was obvious to everyone that making art as a group is a valuable endevour (but you all already knew that, Dr. Z just has the statistics to prove it!). Becoming a professional artist is not necessarily the goal and art experience is not necessary to join. We just like to make stuff!
Why do we need money?
So far, as an informal club, we are completely dependant on donations. Dr. Z and her husband, Chris Harkness, have donated all the art supplies thus far ($$$). Additionally, Away from the World Cafe has been collecting some money and we have raised a few dollars by selling hot cocoe and cappichino during special times at school ($)
But art supplies are expensive (even ordered in bulk) and we are running out. :(
And we would like to do communtiy service projects, go to museums on 1/2 days, be in the art festival, design and sell t-shirts, and put up art shows around the community. :)
Also, we would really like to attend National Portfolio Day in Sarasota Florida in January. A bus for 25 kids is around $1000.00 bucks plus food. NPD is when all the art schools from around the USA have representitives looks at kids' portfolios for admission. Even if we don't have anyone ready to be reviewed, watching the process is a valuable experience. The schools talk about financial aide, markatable skills in art, and the like. Dr. Z used to took her student's from the Williston High School portfolio class in 2007 and 4 students' portfolios were accepted on the spot! :D
Please HELP us by donating monies.
Sincerely yours <3,
2014-2015 CK after-school art club Officers

The hoodies come in s-xxxL. We only have a few extra in black and purple at moment. The front says "CKS art club" with a shark image and the back says, "Art is the ONLY thing that matters! oh... and [a long list of "other" things like science, Doritos, the internet, ...). The back has a print of an acrylic painting of a "mud monstur" by Tessa Paulsen. In our next order, we could order a specific color if wanted. The design looks best on darker colors (and they didn't have gold). Please message our FB site for more information on this.
