Help the Eye Doctors to fight against blindness!!
Glaucoma is a sight threatening disease and costs millions of African people their vision. The disease is much more prevalent in Africa than in European countries, but treatment options are scarce.

Who ?

The Eye Doctors Team: Dr. Pieter Bonnemaijer, Dr. Alberta Thiadens (CCBRT Hospital Dar es Salaam), and Dr. Heiko Philippin (KCMC Hospital Moshi).

Why ?

Glaucoma is the leading cause of irreversible blindness worldwide. The disease causes severe damage of the optic nerve fibers, and without treatment it will lead to blindness. In Africa, 1/3 of blindness is caused by this disease. For 2020, predictions are ominous: ~80 million people will suffer from glaucoma, and 11 million people will become bilaterally blind due to glaucoma. The devastating consequences of glaucoma affecting the quality of lives of millions of people and the current lack of adequate therapies calls for a better counseling and creating more awareness of glaucoma. This has been acknowledged by the IAPB and WHO which are currently targeting glaucoma as a focus of attention for the Vision 2020 framework.

What ?

Our study will improve a better counselling of patients and family members which prevents them from becoming blind. The money you donate will directly go to the salary of our excellent translator, Dr. Abdallah, who helps us 5 days a week with the translation (to Kiswahili) and counselling of all our patients and their relatives. With our goal of 1500 euro we can pay 6 months of salary. This will be a major step forward in creating awareness of glaucoma in Tanzania, and will prevent many people from becoming blind.
