Ikamvalesizwe Combined School is situated in a seaside township in Kenton-on-Sea, South Africa. In this small seaside town there is one supermarket and the only big companies that hire people are Safari game reserves that are situated 5 Kilometers away from the township therefore the only types of jobs or careers these children consider as career paths when they grow up are the typical ones that they are exposed to, that is becoming a policeman, a doctor or a work in the game reserve. A friend of mine who works in an electricity power plant has organized a trip for the children in this community to visit their power plant and see how electricity is generated. This would be a great opportunity for these children to see that there are more careers that they can explore but not only that some of them have never had an opportunity to leave their homes to travel so this will also grant them that chance too. However, to make this trip possible they need help with the transportation costs. The company that they will be visiting is in Johannesburg which is more or less 12-13 hours away from Kenton-on-Sea. The students cannot afford to pay the fee because most of them come from impoverished families, and as I have mentioned before there are limited low income jobs that cater to the needs of this community.
As many of you know, I graduated from this school and hold it dear to my heart. Part of the reasons why I think I managed to be one of their success stories is because of the trips that we used to take and camps that we went to as students back then. This is the reason why I think this trip would be a life changing event for the students who will be participating in it and the reason why I am bringing this to you. Some of you have been to Ikamvalesizwe and some of you were students there as well. You know that what I am talking about is not an exaggeration so I plead with you to make this trip possible for these students.
