It seems hard to believe that just a year ago, Melissa was borrowing a club Laser to see if she really wanted to take her sailing to the next level and compete in single handed dinghy racing. Before we had time to reconsider, she became the proud owner of her snazzy red Laser who was duly christened 'Small Crazy Sailboat'. Since then we have all been on a very steep learning curve as she began her first year of racing starting with the RYA Scottish Spring Championships held in Largs. Showing great courage and committment, Melissa has quickly progressed and this is largely thanks to the support and encouragement from fellow Laser sailors at the Dalgety Bay Sailing Club where she is a member. In the summer, she amazed us by taking part and holding her own amongst the top Youth 4.7 sailors in the UK by competing in the Youth National Open Water Championship held in North Wales, followed by the Inland Championship in October. More recently she travelled south to battle freezing temperatures and strong winds competing in two qualifying rounds in an attempt to be one of only seven girls to represent the UK at the World Championships. As the only girl representing Scotland she was delighted to be awarded a place but as this is entirley self-funding we will need your help to make this happen :)
