I worked at St. Clair and Ontario for 1.5 years. There was one man named Roland who sat on a milk crate every morning outside Dunkn Donuts and sang "Have a Blessed Day, Have a Safe Night" I would occassionally give him money when I walked by. Later, I began investigating what it would take to put together "Kits for the Homeless". I packaged up in a large zip lock bag things like a razor, socks, gloves, undershorts, soap, toothbrush, toothpaste, shaving lotion, etc. I began to pass these kits out and got my colleagues to participate. Roland responded with great enthusiasm as he was able to shave his head and get rid of the lice. Others also loved these kits. In the meantime, I found out some people rent out rooms in their homes for $10 a night. I decided that if I can come up with $10 a night for a small number of individuals, they can stay warm. I can still buy and disperse the kits. In addition, I sit down and talk to the people I try to help. I make sure they are able to use my help to better themselves. I get them to sign up for food stamps and medical assistance and then try to get them into a job training program. I only have enough money to support one or two individuals right now and I'd like to expand it. Please help me work on a one-to-one basis and get our homeless into rooms and get them fed.
