Advent season is fast approaching, it begins on December 2nd. It is the four weeks before Christmas and it calls us to prepare our hearts and minds for the celebration of the birth of Christ. For the past few weeks as I have watched television, there have been nonstop commercials for Black Friday sales. We are full swing into holiday shopping mode. With the over-saturation of the theme “Spend, Spend, Spend” how are we really encouraged to prepare our hearts and minds for Christmas? How are we encouraged to think of the needs of others, to give of ourselves and not just buy gifts? Is Christmas really just reduced to long lines in stores to spend excessive amounts of money to get the perfect for the people in our lives? Is that reason of Christ’s birth? If Christ came so that we might have life and have it more abundantly, charging us to love our neighbor as ourselves, are we living abundantly, giving and sharing with our neighbors? Are we sharing with those close to us and those we don’t know, the stranger who needs a helping hand? The family with no home for the holidays because of Hurricane Sandy?

I have decided that I’m not going to buy Christmas gifts but rather raise money and donate to a worthy charity. I am asking for your help. Starting Sunday, November 25 through December 25, my goal is to raise $500 to donate to CARE a leading humanitarian organization fighting global poverty. CARE helps women, their families and communities transform their lives through poverty-fighting and disaster-relief programs.

“CARE tackles underlying causes of poverty so that people can become self-sufficient. Recognizing that women and children suffer disproportionately from poverty, CARE places special emphasis on working with women to create permanent social change. Women are at the heart of CARE's community-based efforts to improve basic education, increase access to quality health care and expand economic opportunity for all. CARE also delivers emergency aid to survivors of war and natural disasters, and helps people rebuild their lives in the aftermath.” www.care.org

Please help me reach my goal and donate what you can for this worthy charity. Be blessing to someone else and make a difference this Christmas.
