Kayla Ferrante was on top of the world with her whole life ahead of her. She had found her calling and was on a path to make a difference in this world. Kayla graduated from Tulsa Memorial High School a full year early on Friday, May 25th. In her last year at Memorial, Kayla worked with the Special Needs children who are integrated into the school. Within the first week of working with HER kids, she fell in love – not only with the kids but with her role in helping these students. That new passion changed her entire outlook on life. By the end of the year, Kayla had her summer and college courses scheduled; she interviewed and was accepted for a volunteer role at Little Light House where she planned to complete at least 40 volunteer hours this summer. She and her boyfriend were planning their future together as well. But on Saturday, May 26th all of the hopes and dreams that Kayla, her family and friends had for her life were ended by a single bullet. Kayla spent Saturday preparing for her graduation party, celebrating her graduation with family and friends at her grandmother’s house followed by an evening with her boyfriend at a friend’s house. Later that night, she left that friend’s house and was being driven home by her boyfriend when someone fired a high powered weapon at their vehicle. One shot traveled through the license plate, trunk, the passenger’s seat exiting Kayla's chest and continuing through the front windshield. This took place just yards from Kayla's front door – her mother came out to find her daughter bleeding from the gunshot wound, unable to speak or open her eyes though she was still breathing. Despite the efforts of her mother, paramedics and ultimately ER surgeons, Kayla died from her wound. Kayla and her boyfriend, Neikko, were doing nothing wrong; they were not participating in any high risk behavior and are not believed to have been the target of the shooter but none of that changes the fact that Kayla was murdered that night by some unknown person. This could have been anyone’s child but in this case the victim was Kayla. Our world will never be the same – in that moment, the lives of so many were destroyed – Kayla was a daughter, granddaughter, niece, cousin, best friend, girlfriend, helper and inspiration to so many. We also lost a future – She will never be able to help the special needs kids that were so important to her…. All of this loss for what? Police need our help in finding who took this beautiful girl from her family and friends. We are asking for donations to a specific reward fund to help bring the people that did this to justice. Donors can make checks payable to Crime Commission and in the memo designate it to the Kayla Ferrante reward. The mailing address is 2121 S. Columbia, LL8 Tulsa, OK 74114. If an arrest is made but not through Crime Stoppers the reward funds collected in Kayla’s name will be donated to the Memorial High School Special Needs fund to help the children she came to consider HER Kids so that her name will live on in the lives of those she touched. This is not the normal way of handling reward funds but those at Crime Stoppers feel that this is a special case and want something positive to come from it. Someone knows who did this and why – that person needs to come forward. Tips can be provided anonymously by calling Crime Stoppers at 918-596-COPS.
