Africa and specially North Africa is not the continent that is particularly good to animals. On the contrary - animals are abandoned, thrown away, starved on the chain or are shot or poisoned and suffer a painful death. I took the fight. As a one-woman show almost alone in Luxor - Egypt, I save what can be saved. I will found a private shelter, so that the homeless animals have at least a roof over their head and have regularly a full belly!
I have a full-time job - and beside I am caring for the animals that
do not have people to take care of them.
The work is funded
entirely by my pocket, the tips we get at my job and public donations.
Each day I wake up and I really don't know how to go on or how to
feed the animals.
There are now around 40 street dogs (+ some are
not coming regular and other are coming from I don't know where
around), 3 rescued dogs and 2 rescued falcons in our home here and I
can't afford the help which is actually needed to look after them and
provide them the quality of life they deserve, but I continue to do
each day my best for them !!
Who is Masrya and where is Medinet Habou?
Masrya 23 years young and a human like everyone else with the
strong willing of fighting all her life against anything which is in
her eyes bad and not acceptable.
Since she is born she was living with animals (dogs, falcon, horses,
camels, donkeys, cheaps, cows, cats, ...) together. Her roots are
German and Egyptian, between both countries she build up a strong
connection to them and whenever she was able to she would help and
care.
Both of her parents, her mother (German) who was a well
known and reccomend psychologist in Germany - as well as her father
(Egyptian) teached her the love for animals.
Until now she is
living with 3 rescued dogs and 2 rescued falcons (one of them since 19
years) together.
Born and grown up in Germany, living now in
Egypt; gave her the perfect mix between both cultures.
Since one year I'm living now in Habou, back to my fathers house
which exist since 1881 and is considered across the Temple of Medinet
Habou in Luxor, Westbank, El Bairat, Egypt.
I've lived before at
a younger age here for five years but never before than now I have
seen the cruelty against the animals so strong.
The house has two appartments with a large roof top but no garden or backyard where I could keep the street dogs.
I'm working now at our own family business in gastronomy which is
located at the same spot. In Germany I finished school and college,
studied tourism and became and worked as travel agent.
I’ve
worked agency side and charity side, mostly for refugees as translator
and first contact and mediator between authorities, police and refugees.
Another sector I'm working at right now is keeping the heritage for the area Habou alive.
I keep updating almost every day with live videos on Facebook to show the needs, the good and the bad too @habouanimalsluxor .
Caring about the Street Dogs in Habou
I try my best to reduce the suffering of the stray dog
population all the time we were in Habou as well as always brought
food with us for them. Since I am back, I couldn't stand to see our
animals suffering. Unregulated breeding has resulted in large numbers
of sick and starving dogs and puppies on the streets, the area around
and the temple.
In addition to feeding and loving, we have the dogs vaccinated, sterilized and castrated to avoid the spread of diseases, infections and other unwanted puppies on the street, who end up having a bad life with a lot of anxiety and pain.
Caring about other Animals
In addition to the dogs, we have taken 2 falcon permanently, one of them was seriously injured by a cat and can hardly fledge since then. Furthermore, we take care of the birds in the temple, unfortunately, the population of pigeons has increased in recent years by 100%. We rehabilitate sick birds and then let them return to their natural environment. Other animals are cats (but due to the big dog population only very few occur) and donkeys, whose wounds are regularly supplied by me.
Aims
My goal is to improve the welfare of stray dog populations. An
important part of our work will be the education of local children to
dispel their fear of being attacked by a dog or catching a disease.
Often fear can lead people to persecute animals.
As well as teaching greater tolerance and understanding of dogs I also encourage people to adopt them as pets as well as we will build up partnerships for the dogs.
We urgently need to build up a shelter to take the dogs away from the
street!
Away from the cruelty and to give them a better
life!
The plan is made and a land of 2100 square meters near
Habou is ready to be rent with a green contract (legal paper to buy or
rent a land !!)
The shelter will have rooms for our 24/7 vet, an kitchen to prepare
the food, a fresh water piepes, a dog and horse/donkey shower, a dog
pond, free spaces and dog rooms, a feeding area, a separated area for
our guests and volunteers as well as a wc, ... .
The cost for the
this will be 100000 EGP ~ 5000€ ~ 8500 U$
We have a very good vet who is alredy and will be 24h available for us, his needs are our needs and the needs of the animals.
Monthly fix costs
• rental for the land 8000 EGP ~ 400€ ~ 470 U$
• salary for
the vet and at least two person who will help us, clean and know how
to deal with dogs and animals (!!) 7000 EGP ~ 350€ ~ 400 U$
•
costs for water and electricity 1500 EGP ~ 75€ ~ 85 U$
• costs
for dog food 8500 EGP ~ 425€ ~ 500 U$
• cost for medications 2500
EGP ~ 125€ ~ 145 U$
