...Meet two Indigenous women with big dreams about decolonizing therapy
With much gratitude, Shauna Deguire & Jill Therrien were both recently accepted as presenters for the International Expressive Arts Therapy Association's biannual conference. This year the IEATA conference focus is on Indigenous Roots, led by Anishinaabe elders, on Anishinaabe territory in Winnepeg, Manitoba, Canada. What a perfect opportunity for these women to share perspectives on how to decolonize traditional therapy by meeting and sharing among healers throughout the world! They are honored to be part of an organization that seeks to bring Indigenous wisdom and art to the forefront of therapy.
Please support their journey by donating travel funds.
A note form Shauna & Jill:
Thank you for reading about our presentations below. Please consider donating to support our ability to travel to Winnepeg, Manitoba, Canada from Oakland, California. We seek a grand total of $2,600 to cover the cost of airfare and week's worth of lodging for both of us.
Your love & support allows us to continue the work that we do. Without you we could not touch the lives of so many people around us. Everything is connected and interdependent. Earth Mother teaches us this daily. With your generous donations you will be supporting us to transform therapy into a positive act of healing for the seven generations to come.
We are so grateful to you! Chi Miigwetch, Marsee
About the presentations:
Jill Therrien presents, Weaving Our Stories: Identity Building with Indigenous Urban Youth. This presentation will address the emergence and integration of identity in multi-cultural adolescent communities living in urban environments. Informed by a group case study of adolescent females who identify commonly as Indigenous, while individually express a wide range of identities, this sharing will address the complexity, intersections, strengths, and challenges of identity formation from an indigenous perspective. The wisdom of Creativity and the Medicine Wheel will be at the backbone of this presentation.
More information about Jill and her use of expressive arts can be found at jilltherrien.com
Shauna Deguire presents her workshop Ecological Awareness through the Arts. Shauna believes as a Métis woman, it is important that the knowledge of ecology is passed down as a way of therapy. The earth needs us to listen and we need to listen to the earth. As founder and director of the Ecological Expressive Arts Organization she has worked in partnership with artists and ecological groups including Golden Gate Audubon Society, Half-Moon Bay State Beach California, Contra Costa Regional Medical Center, as well as starting a new wildcrafting business called Mystics in Motion.
Shauna’s Workshop shares the wisdom that the love of nature is the pathway towards healing ourselves, healing communities, and healing our sacred mother earth. Workshop participants will learn how to combine eco therapy with expressive arts therapy from an indigenous lens. Attendees will learn how to recognize animal and plant spirit guides as well as how to use specific eco therapy tools for clients with trauma for indoor and outdoors therapy settings.
