Hi! We need your help! My sister Wittney, our best friend Alison and I, are going with Hand In Hand Ministries, on a mission trip to Belize. On March 8th of this year, we'll depart on a journey to help those less fortunate and living in poverty, finally have a place they can truly call home.  While our work and volunteerism is free to those who need it, the trip to go help them will cost a little over $2,100 per person.  This cause is true to our hearts but we need help getting there.

Poverty in Belize, as in other Central American countries, is a major problem. According to the statistics from the Caribbean Development Bank, Belize has a poverty rate at 30%- 40% of the population. The average Belizean lives on just over $300 US per year. Most of the poor people in Belize are dependent on the agriculture and fishing sector for their livelihood. In Belize City, the poor depend primarily on construction, cutting yards, and cleaning drains, just to name a few. The poor people of this country display a high level of labor commitment in terms of the number of hours they work–but for less than $2 per day.

Hand in Hand, working in Belize since 2002, has developed programs to address many of these problems.

• Building for Change has built more than 185 homes in Belize City, changing the lives of those in need.

• Outreach Center and Mobile Outreach serve Belize City and Dangriga. Children receive the medical care they need along with day care and preschool education. Outreach services help teenagers and adults affected by or afflicted with HIV/AIDS.

• Scholarships are offered to high school and college students. Hand in Hand believes that education is the key to breaking the cycle poverty. Currently 15 high school and 15 college students receive Hand in Hand scholarships.
