Whitburn Band
After winning the Scottish Brass Band Championships in 2013,
Whitburn Band will represent Whitburn, West Lothian and Scotland at
the prestigious European Brass Band Championships. This year's event
is even more prestigious for us as, for the first time in 10 years,
the contest is being held in Scotland, at the Perth Concert Hall on
the 2nd & 3rd May.
Whitburn has a proud record of representing Scotland in the event and has achieved some outstanding results in the past, notably in finishing second in 1990. This year, the Europeans are the focal point of the band's busiest period in some time, following the Scottish Championships in March and with the Grand Shield in Blackpool the week before the Europeans. For each of our 30 players, this means that in the first four months of 2014:
- The band will have spent 212 hours together, on 54 separate days
- A total of 6360 man-hours will have been spent preparing and performing for the three contests
- Four test pieces will be performed in an 8-week period
- None of this includes the extra work many of our players put in to support, teach and conduct our Childrens' Band, Youth Band and Heartlands Band
Being this busy comes at a cost with band hall costs, conductors and transportation to contests being significantly higher than normal. Combine this with the fact that we can't earn as much money performing (we're too busy!) and the band is facing a financial shortfall. We need your help to get us to Perth.
We're going to work for this help, though, and we have a number of events planned to help us raise money. The centrepiece of this will be a symbolic sponsored cycle from Whitburn to Perth - members of the band, most of whom haven't cycled anywhere for years, will cycle a 60 mile route from our bandhall to the Concert Hall in Perth on the 19th April. We'll start with a short parade in Whitburn to see off the cyclists, and those who aren't cycling will be playing along the route at Dobbie's Garden Centres in Livingston, Dunfermline and Kinross to give moral support.
Please donate so that the cyclists have something to aim for! We'll give updates on the campaign through our Facebook page and here. Anything you can donate will be appreciated, no matter how small or large.
Thanking you in advance for all your support,
All at Whitburn Band
