So many people are looking for ways to help during the Thanksgiving and Christmas season. Here is one direct way: My sister, Sharon, formerly of New Orleans, who was displaced by Katrina (and many of you helped her then), whose husband died when her son was 2, is the sole and primary caretaker for her mentally disabled son, now 36. Because of an inadequate mental health system, he, like so many of the mentally ill in our population, has moved from pillar to post with poor outcome, from home to home and facility to facility throughout Tennessee, where he/they relocated after Katrina. Sharon worked various jobs, including as a full-time receptionist at Christian Brothers University in Memphis until a few months ago when her doctor told her she was clinically exhausted. Sometimes I talk to her and she can barely speak -- her voice is shot from the pain and suffering and sheer work of trying to care for her son. SO HERE IS THE GOOD NEWS::::The good news is that she has found a place for the two of them in New York and New Jersey, where longtime family friends live. Shawn will be engaged with the Jericho Road New Jersey, http://jerichoroadnj.org, a supportive housing network that will train him in carpentry, plumbing and electrical, and watch over him 24-7. This will free up Sharon to work full-time at her friends' design company and to take a room in their expansive home. Here, finally, is their opportunity to find life and support, care and comfort. Meanwhile, what meager funds Sharon managed to collect and earn during her work years is depleted. Her family and immediate friends are contributing what we can now. But we can't do it all. Sharon needs financial assistance to pay her last month's rent in Memphis and for living expenses while she closes down her life in Memphis. She needs to rent a truck and pay a driver and then drive three days to New York with her son, requiring hotels along the way. She and Shawn need warm clothes and other goods to begin their lives in the northeast. Our hope is to raise $3,800 by Dec. 15. To that end, if you so desire, you can make a donation here. If you would like to be in touch with me or Sharon, please private message me. Blessings and peace for the season and thank you for reading. ~ Debra-Lynn B. Hook
