A Community Based Pilot Project to Reduce Jiggers’ Infestation through Treatment, Prevention and Health Education among the residents of Kandara District, Kenya.

Goals

The goal of the Step of Courage pilot project is to address root causes and demonstrate effective remediation techniques for the treatment and prevention of jigger infestation in 2,500 residents of Kandara, Muranga, Kenya by July, 2015.

Specific objectives

• Provide access to safe and effective treatment of jiggers to the affected populous.

• Improve behavior to prevent jigger infestation by communicating how individuals can make changes to environments that are currently conducive to survival, reproduction and spread of tungiasis.

• Strengthen community health volunteers in management of jiggers and behavior change communication. Expected Outcomes

• Increased upkeep of safe jiggers management techniques.

• Increased capacity of the residents and community health workers in prevention and management of jiggers.

• Reduction in jiggers’ prevalence and incidences in the target population.

• Reduction in the risk of HIV transmission and other infections.
