Since 2008 I have worked hands-on with domestic and wild animals at rescue and rehabilitation centres, sanctuaries, animal hospitals, pet retreats, and edited international wildlife journals in Canada, United States and China. Bears are my passion and I felt God put it on my heart to come to China after seeing bears being barbarically milked for their bile on bear farms. I arrived in China when I was 28, working and volunteering at the fore-mentioned facilities, rescuing several animals from abuse, adopting 4 cats as my own. I learned through first-hand experiences that bear farming was only one part of the problem. Stray and owned dogs/cats are stolen off the streets, then boiled and skinned alive for their meat and fur, bears and tigers are tortured for their parts, circuses and zoos abuse wild animals to perform inhumanely and unnaturally. All of these factors are related to the perspective of a large majority of Chinese that animals cannot feel pain or emotions. The lack of international standards of veterinary care proliferates this cycle of abuse and the view that animals are non-sentient.

I have started an organization to address these problems. Ruby Animal Rescue (RAR) which, in Mandarin exemplifies the goal to increase the human-animal bond, for people to love and value animals like jewels. It also incorporates the significance of the color red as good luck and protection in the Chinese culture. RAR’s mission is “For every animal that is starving, abused, or in deplorable captivity, we will bring HOPE for a better life.” RAR envisions a Canadian-Chinese partnership empowering Chinese veterinarians and rescuers with the tools to end cruel animal abuse across the country, with a focus on bears. Our main objective is to build an Education and Rescue Centre to rescue animals, and teach multiple disciplines of animal care such as physiotherapy, hydrotherapy, psychology, holistic and animal assisted therapy and much more to both Chinese and international animal professionals. To achieve this, first RAR is utilizing several highly successful animal welfare programmes from Shanghai and Hong Kong to serve as a platform to further our objectives and stop animal abuse across China.

To push RAR forward I work multiple jobs and live very humbly. I put my animals and the ones I rescue, their care, and RAR above my own basic needs. As we are working towards registering RAR as a charity in Canada, to cover costs I have started a dog biscuit business, had an online donation drive, contacted corporations, and attempted to hold a fundraiser in town. Despite efforts, goals were not met and RAR was not sponsored, so I covered all the external costs personally to ensure honesty and transparency, ensuring that all donations raised go directly to helping animals. I desperately need help to cover expenses and provide me with the tools necessary to raise awareness, develop RAR's programs and goals, and make a large impact.
Please contact me if you wish to see a the budgeted list for this fundraiser, RAR's yearly budget, a summary of our programs, and much more.
