In 2003 I had the honor of riding the EMS Memorial Bike ride for the first time in support of fellow Paramedic Dale Francis and many other EMS professionals who lost their lives doing what they loved, riding the last three days from Philadelphia to Roanoke Virginia. Since then too many more have passed before their time, several of which I knew personally including Michael Garvin from my longtime volunteer EMS service. Again last year I “caught the ride” from Princeton through to the end in Alexandria, Virginia. Along the way I met dozens of very devoted, energetic and enthusiastic riders, wingman (ride support team) and EMS providers who came out to lend a hand, offer a drink of water or simply cheer us on. The event has grown from less than a dozen riders in 2001 to over 100 registered for all or part of the week-long event along the east coast with many others riding in other areas of the country for the same cause.

This year I will again ride, in honor, respect and admiration of those professionals who gave their lives in services of others, as EMS providers. I will ride the entire week from Maine to Philadelphia. I will be humbled by the stories of those who went before me over the past year. I will ride for those who cannot, as an EMS professional, a colleague and a friend.

The Muddy Angles, as they are called, are the riders and wingman that make up the National EMS Memorial Bike Ride. Almost all expenses for the ride are covered by the individuals who are participating in the ride. We pay for our hotel rooms each night and our travel costs to and from the start/finish locations. We take time off from work and family in order to participate in the ride and honor those who have passed.

As the expenses of the weeklong event mount I am looking to my friends and your support to help defray my own costs so that I can focus on the event and its purpose.

Thank you,

Duane
