Camelia Fraiss hasn't added a story.

ENGLISH

With wolves returned to the Alps, the lynx reintroduced in the Jura, and bears present in the Pyrenees, as well as problematic stray dogs, sheep guarding dogs have become ever more useful in France as a means of protection. However most of our knowledge concerning the guarding dogs is empiric. No study has looked into how these dogs actually work. More specifically the spacial behavior of the adult dogs and how this correlates to the social behavior of puppies.

It is generally accepted that the presence of these dogs in the flock is the first step for protection efficacy. The question is how the pup ʼ s social behavior with the flock and also with humans determines his social and spacial behavior as an adult ?

This project proposes to analyze the influence of various factors on the pup and on the way, once he is an adult, he will use space when outside with the sheep.

-       The social behavior of the pups will be studied at different stages of their development to evaluate their interest in the flock, in other dogs, and in humans.

-       The movement of the dogs when adults, their interactions with the environment, as well as their patterns of activity will be quantified and qualified using GPS collars, proximity loggers, and accelerometers during a defined period of time when the sheep pasture.

This study will allow us to scientifically obtain and validate fundamental knowledge on how sheep guarding dogs function and cohabit with others. This knowledge should help establish dog selection and more specifically improve efficacy and reduce conflicts. It also will give sheep owners helpful tools for analyze and decision making. Equally by determining the protection dogsʻ time budget and energy expenditure, presently unknown, their needs will be better understood.

It's been almost two years that I have been fighting to carry out this wide study. Despite that many Regional and National Parks, livestock owners, and Nature Associations are interested by the project and take part to the project, the government remains reserved and the money to get started is sorely missing.

For true cohabitation of predators and humans in mountain regions and Nature in general, we have to factor in the needs of multiple users.

Please help me raise funds for the project and follow this three year study about livestock guarding dogs, sheep and wolves and, take advantage of the project results for wolf preservation in your home country.
