I am in the Philippines working on a PhotoVoice project (participatory photographic storytelling technique) with marginalized communities from the Cordillera (indigenous area in the mountainous north) and Mindanao (southern area with a large Muslim and indigenous population). Women from these communities will learn basic photography techniques and explore themes that emerge from the photos that they take. They will critically analyze community needs and explore strengths while sharing stories and personal experiences from their own perspectives.

The photos will be exhibited in each community and Manila, compiled into an album for the communities and posted on a website. This project will contribute to raising awareness about issues commonly seen in the Philippines, mobilizing people, empowering marginalized communities and building solidarity (locally and internationally) in the fight for human rights and transformative social justice.

This is part of my McGill Master of Social Work field placement with GABRIELA (www.gabrielaph.com), a progressive grassroots women's organization that is world renowned for their mass people's movement and organizing work in urban poor and peasant communities across the Philippines. They tackle the roots of poverty, violence against women, poor health, insecure housing and displacement in urban poor and peasant communities through community organizing and women’s empowerment.

ALL OF THE EQUIPMENT PURCHASED FOR THIS PROJECT WILL BE DONATED TO GABRIELA AFTER THE PROJECT.

Even a $5-$10 donation will make a huge difference to the success of this project. Just 16 people donating $25 each covers everything (5 cameras, batteries, charger, printing, exhibits and magazines of the participants’ photos).

Donations ($CAN or $US) can also be made by e-money transfer or PayPal to: laura.mckeeman@mail.mcgill.ca (fewer fees than through this site). Or by cheque to ‘Laura McKeeman’ sent to my parents’ house at: 90 James St W, Guelph, ON, N1G 1E6.

Another way to donate is by opening an ING DIRECT account (only if you don't already have one) with at least $100 before December 31st, and we'll both get a $50 bonus! I can use that to fund the project and you get $50 too! But don't forget to enter my orange key when signing up: 35186086S1

Feel free to email me for more details (no fees, high interest rates and great free features - I've really enjoyed banking with them)!
