HUGH'S STORY:
Our son Hugh, (19) and 3 others, were arrested on horrible charges (robbery, breaking into a house and also kidnapping for taking 2 pizza delivery drivers for a 'spin' and stealing thier money). He has been in prison for 3 years now. We are hurting so bad right now to think that he could ever do such a thing to someone. He was raised so much better than that. He moved out about 5 months before and started living with his girlfriend and her mother, trying to support them on a grocery stocker's pay. He was not cutting it and felt too ashamed to move back home. He got in with the wrong crowd, who taunted and teased him and who 'have' been in trouble before and is now facing the challenge of his life. One good thing he has going for himself is that he realizes what he has done and is truly sorry. He says he has NO ONE to blame BUT himself. He wants to help other youth to realize the dangers of peer pressure when he gets out. He has NEVER been in trouble in his LIFE and has always been a good kid. He even used to volunteer in the children's ministry at church and has been awarded a scholarship to college.
How can a child that is raised so well, take something from someone that can never be replaced? And-how can you heal the heart and soul of the people he hurt? We hurt so bad for them also.
They court told him that he had to make a decision:
to either take it to trial (which the prosecutor told us that if he "did" then she would throw the book at him and give him LIFE)
OR
he could settle for a "deal of 30 YEARS????"
(Or, plea to the "Mercy of the Court" and let the judge sentence him directly. Not thinking that would EVER happen, and, under the guidance of our public defender, that is what we chose.)
Hugh also qualifies for what is called a "Youthful Offender" status, which means that you must fit CERTAIN criteria to qualify, ALL of which Hugh did.
I am just in shock that a kid that has never been in trouble in his life could face that much time for a first offense? No one was killed or even hurt physically. We do NOT think he should get off scott free, but this just doesn't make sense?
They sentenced our son on March 25, 2010 to 40 years in prison in BOTH the counties where the crimes took place. With good behavior he could get out in 35 and a half. (We no longer have "PAROLE" in the state of Florida.) He is one of 'the' youngest in the prison, with about 95% more time than everyone else, INCLUDING some murderers, rapists, child molesters, abusers, etc.
Please help us change this.
