Help Jaime Finally Own a Home
Jaime Cheong Poh Yoke is 59 years old and works as a toilet
cleaner in Beach Road.
She has no family. As a child, she was adopted by a Cantonese
couple in Chinatown, but tragedy struck early when her adoptive
father died just six months later. Her adoptive mother struggled to
make ends meet by washing dishes.
By the age of six, Jaime was already working, washing and
clearing dishes for street hawkers in Chinatown in exchange for
food. She left school in Secondary Two and spent the rest of her
life working to support herself.
Through all the hardships she faced, Jaime held on to one simple
dream: to own a home she could call her own.
She has survived two failed marriages and has no children. For
years, she has rented a room in a two-room flat, paying $500 a month.
Last year, that lifelong dream finally seemed within reach when
she successfully balloted for a two-room sales of balance flexi flat
at Bukit Merah View. But today, she risks losing it.
Despite multiple appeals, Jaime has not been able to secure
enough funds to complete the purchase of her flat. Banks have
declined to extend a loan to her, and she is not eligible for a HDB loan.
She still needs $100,000.
If she is unable to raise the funds by 1 August 2026, her flat application will be cancelled and her dream of home ownership may slip away once again.
For many of us, a home is something we take for granted. For Jaime, it is the dream of a lifetime: a place of stability, dignity and security after decades of hardship and hard work.
