Milenko Masic hasn't added a story.
Serbian language version is below
The act of sacrifice of Miloje Scepanovic, a police officer from Niksic, Montenegro, in defense of the Serbian Orthodox Church (SPC) in Montenegro, and religious and human rights of its members, deserves admiration and support of all freedom loving people. Please consider donating to this campaign aspiring to raise $6,000 to help support Mr. Scepanovic. He resigned from his police officer position which he served for twenty-three years in protest of the injustice and police brutality against members of SPC. This amount is estimated to be the equivalent of one year of the wages he lost.
About the campaign organizer
This fundraising campaign is organized by Milenko Masic with the help and support of his friends and family from San Diego, California, USA. Dr. Masic has strong family ties with Montenegro. He does not personally know Mr. Scepanovic but his story inspired him to undertake this campaign.
Background
Miloje Scepanovic left his job and only source of income in protest of the oppression and ongoing violence against members of SPC in Montenegro opposing the recent enactment of the so called “Freedom of Religion Law”. This discriminatory law is anything but what its title deceptively implies. It aims to confiscate the property of SPC in Montenegro and threatens its very existence. Its true purpose is to eliminate the presence of SPC in Montenegro and sever all the remaining ties between its people and the rest of the Serb ethnic corpus in the surrounding countries, and in the rest of the world. Unfortunately, these statements are not speculative opinions. The president of Montenegro, Mr. Milo Djukanovic, has openly expressed in no uncertain terms that he and his government perceive SPC as a threat to the statehood of Montenegro and used that as a justification for their latest actions. Lessons from history teach us that it is extremely troubling when a statesman thinks and talks like this, and acts accordingly with impunity.
It is abundantly clear that the government of Montenegro is on a mission to completely erase Serbian cultural presence in the country. Recent attacks against SPC are consistent with other similar systematic and deliberate acts committed by Mr. Djukanovic’s government against Serbian people and their culture. This includes the removal and institutionalized forceful change of the Serbian language, and alphabet used in Montenegro. These acts without a doubt constitute an ethnocide according to its universally recognized definition - deliberate and systematic destruction of the culture of an ethnic group.
SPC has been an integral part of the Serbian cultural heritage on the territory of present-day Montenegro for centuries. It is not a fault of the Serbs and SPC in Montenegro that Mr. Djukanovic has recently created a state where SPC has been present for eight hundred years. Podgorica, the capital of Montenegro, is the birth place of Stefan Nemanja, the founder of the Nemanjic dynasty. He and his son, Saint Sava, created Serbian Orthodox Church, and with other members of the Nemanjic dynasty, built numerous monasteries in Montenegro and left precious cultural heritage. SPC is not and has never been the church of the current, past, or future Serbian state, but of all Serbian people of the Orthodox Christian faith, wherever they live, and in whatever changing political reality that may be.
Not only is the government of Montenegro acting against universal norms and its own constitution, but also against the proclaimed European values that they so enthusiastically promote. Unfortunately, they only do this declaratively and not in practice. The nature of Mr. Djukanovic's actions, his open verbal hostility against Serbs and SPC, and their evident progressively worsening conditions in Montenegro make it exceedingly difficult and irresponsible to second-guess their final intent and afford Mr. Djukanovic’s government the benefit of the doubt. The severity of the consequences of these acts call for an adequate civic response as history teaches us.
It is a sad reality that the recent developments targeting SPC in Montenegro strikingly resemble other tragic moments in the history of Serbs in the twentieth century. In 1942, The Independent State of Croatia passed a law to establish the so-called Croatian Orthodox Church as a way to address perceived Serbian threat to its statehood. The tragedy for Serbs, SPC, and its clergy in the Independent State of Croatia that ensued and accompanied this law is well known and horrifying. It is not the fault of the Serbs that notice the similarities, but of Mr. Djukanovic who has invoked this tragic memory.
Described ethnocidal acts of Mr. Djukanovic’s government do not happen in isolation and without a broader context. The regime of the neighboring so-called Kosovo has already expressed similar intents and openly exercised ideas in the United Nations and UNESCO to officially convert and declare Serbian historical and cultural heritage in Kosovo and Metohia as the heritage of the so-called Kosovars. In the time and age of elevated societal sensitivity to concepts such as cultural appropriation, Serbian heritage and collective memory is being destroyed and not only appropriated. Examples that support this claim include Kosovo’s regime initiative helped by Germany to build a Catholic cathedral on the medieval ruins of an Orthodox church in the historic town of Novo Brdo founded by King Milutin from the Nemanjic dynasty. It is indeed hard to ignore the fact that the protagonists and the methods in this ongoing process of the destruction of the Serbian cultural heritage have remained the same and familiar.
Helping Miloje Scepanovic is a small step in the long struggle to preserve Serbian culture and heritage in Montenegro. In addition to helping Mr. Scepanovic, participation in this campaign will send a message that those involved in similar noble struggles are not alone and forgotten, and that their sacrifices are appreciated and respected by the Serbian community, their friends and supporters, and the broader community of all freedom and justice loving people.
