A pregnant Mama Potbellied Pig (24-36 months) was saved from slaughter at a Stockyard in the IE for $5 !!  The kind hearted Rescuer was told by the staff that this pig was just over fed by the previous owner with chicken scratch and hog chow. The rescuer was told "The pig would still be good eating for BBQ if interested." The rescuer paid the $5 and brought it to her family's home in Norco. The poor pig was so stressed and freightened!! She was given a good, healthy warm meal, provided a secluded safe place to rest with many blankets and fresh water. Within 24 hours the female pig revealed she was pregnant by giving birth to 7 piglets. Five girls and two boys. The one baby boy did not survive birthing, the second baby boy was accidentally laid on by the exhausted and weak Mama pig. She was not able to provide milk initially and the five baby girls needed to be bottle feed for their first two weeks. Proper care is being provided to the five girls, Mama pig was given a space next to her piglets but allowed to sleep, rest undisturb and regain her strength. She is now providing some milk to all five girls daily. The girls are hungry every two hours so substitutes are being given to help Mama pig with her duties. All the girls are doing extremely well considering what might have happened had the kind rescue not saved the unknown mother at the time. Before any adoptions, all the girls will need to be spayed & vaccinated and receive post-op care till they are safe to travel to their new forever homes. No real history was provided but it is believed from comments by the stockyard staff that this fortunate pig was once a breeder pig that had just grown too big to show, was perhaps replaced by a younger cuter pig or if nothing else just had outlasted its usefulness. Mama pig is doing well and it has not been determined yet whether she will be adopted out or stay with her current foster care in Norco.
