We would like to introduce you to an amazing young woman, Katie Flynn. She is a beautiful 32 year old cancer survivor who has an infectious love of life and is an inspiration to all who know her. Diagnosed at just four years old, she has fought against all odds to recover from cancer treatments, numerous surgeries, and several strokes with incredible courage and grace. As a result of these treatments her heart has suffered irreversible damage to the extent that in November of 2013 Katie was permanently attached to an external heart pump until such time that a donor heart becomes available.

As a cancer survivor, Katie has felt called to be an outspoken advocate for funding and services for people with cancer. In 2012 Katie traveled to Washington, D.C. as the Onondaga County representative for the American Cancer Society Cancer Action Network (A.C.S.C.A.N.) to lobby the federal government to continue their funding of cancer research. In addition, after serving many years as an active and dedicated member of the local American Cancer Society Relay for Life Committee, Katie was the keynote speaker for the 2012 Solvay/Geddes/Westvale Relay for Life kick-off where her inspirational speech moved and motivated all in attendance.

Until her heart condition became more serious, Katie was the dynamic co-chair of her church’s mission outreach committee. She worked to bring services and support to people in need in the community. She was also an enthusiastic Sunday school teacher who took the time to support and enrich the lives of her students in and outside the classroom. She has touched so many lives, both directly and indirectly, by living a life of purpose, generosity and compassion.
