My best friend is awesome.  She works two jobs and raises her daughter by herself.  They keep an immaculate yet modest place near Knoxville, TN. Her daughter is nine and is a straight-A student, not to mention bloody awesome as well.

Bianca(her daughter) has an opportunity to visit D.C. in the spring with a group of her classmates.  They are not allowing all of them to go--just a select few that are academically exceptional and --get this--volunteer to help younger kids in class.  (This kid stays after school to help the younger ones and the special needs children find the right bus to get on.  Not a joke.)

The thing is--my best friend would never ask a soul for money to help her.  It just is not in her nature.  She lives so fugally that she only buys manager's specials and shops on certain days to get the best deals so that her and her daughter eat well.  She has sacrificed many things that the rest of us take for granted to give her daughter a running start in life.

When I asked Bianca what she wanted as a present last year she simply said--books.  Needless to say--I love this kid and made damn sure she had as many of them as she wanted.

Please help me send her on this trip that I think every kid should get the chance to go on.  I did not get to see the Capitol until I was much older and want her to have the chance to look at the Lincoln memorial with the awe of a child. Her mother simply cannot do it alone and I want to help her.
