Kyle enlisted in the Army right after his 18th birthday in September before he graduated from Frontier Local High School the following May of 2010. Immediately following basic training, he was deployed to Afghanistan. Three months in he stepped on an IED while on patrol. Kyle was injured when he was 19 and is now 21. There was little communication at first. Just that he was critically wounded ,he lost both legs and was fighting for his life. A friend of his, Nick Hensley, was injured at the same time. Kyle went from a field hospital, to another hospital in Afghanistan then to Germany where he then lost his left arm and his friend Nick. It took 10 days to get him back to US soil to Brooke Army Medical Hospital in San Antonio, Texas. He was sent to Texas because that is the Army’s only burn unit. There he had numerous surgeries and skin grafts. It was surgery every other day for awhile. He spent 75 days in ICU and five months in the hospital.
While in the hospital, Kyle was given a phone number to call Gary Sinise. Gary had tracked him down and wanted to talk to him. During the conversation, Gary said I would like to build you a house. The Gary Sinise Foundation and the Tunnel to Towers Foundation partner to build “smart homes” for the most severely wounded soldiers.
