Hi everyone,
I’m reaching out because I’m in a very difficult situation and I need help. Recently, I was in a serious car accident. I swerved to avoid hitting an animal in the road, not realizing it had just rained on that side of town. The roads were slick, and I lost control of my car. I was rushed to the hospital, admitted to the ICU, and later had surgery for a pelvis that was broken in three places, along with a broken rib.
Right now, I am having to relearn how to walk. The doctors say it may be 3–6 months before I can fully walk on my own again. During all of this, I found out that my car insurance had been canceled an hour before the accident because I didn’t respond to a notification they sent me earlier that day. So I now have no car and medical bills totaling about $125,000.
On top of that, my rent is past due and I am facing eviction with nowhere safe to go. My mom is the only person I have to lean on, but she lives with someone and there isn’t space for me, my walker, or the other accommodations I need right now. In my current condition, I simply cannot be on the street.
Before the accident, I struggled with addiction for 15 years. I was actually on my way to pick up when the accident happened—only two blocks away from where I was going. In many ways, my addiction almost killed me. Since the accident, I have been sober, and I want to stay that way. I am very afraid that being homeless and back on the streets will be a huge trigger and put my sobriety at serious risk. I do not want to go back to using.
Despite the pain, I feel hopeful about my future and the changes I’m making. I’ve been talking to my kids every day since the accident after barely being involved in their lives for the last 10 years because of my addiction. I missed so much time with them, and I don’t want to lose any more.
Right now, though, I’m overwhelmed by how I’m supposed to rebuild from nothing while dealing with massive medical debt, no car, and not even the basic necessities to get through recovery. I have zero income at the moment. My mom is helping me with food as much as she can, but she’s struggling too. I’ve applied for assistance, but those processes take time, and I need help now just to keep a roof over my head and make it through this recovery period.
I’ve always been extremely independent, and it is very hard for me to ask for help. But I’m at a point where I can’t do this alone. If you are able to help in any way—financially, by sharing this message, or by connecting me with resources for housing, medical bill assistance, or recovery support—it would mean more than I can say.
Thank you for taking the time to read my story and for any help, prayers, or encouragement you can offer. I am committed to staying sober, healing, and being present for my children, and your support could truly help me make it to that better future I’m working toward.
