A Brighter Tomorrow: Elizabeth’s Journey to Freedom
Hello! I’m Elizabeth, and I would like to share my journey with you. After enduring three tremendously challenging years in an incredibly abusive relationship, I finally decided it was time to reclaim my life. I must admit, I was incredibly frightened at first, grappling with overwhelming control, violence, and an addicted fiance. My abuser/fiance loomed over me like a frightening giant—7 feet tall and 275 pounds—so you can only imagine the feelings I experienced. Yet, with every attempt I made to escape, I grew a little stronger, and my desire for freedom intensified.
On my third and final attempt, I gathered my courage. One night, while my abuser was passed out and completely unaware, I quietly packed my essentials and tiptoed into the night, cane in hand. Timing was everything, and with bated breath, I made my escape, listening intently as the door clicked softly shut behind me. I knew he would be after me, and my adrenaline surged. My heart raced as I hobbled down the road to my best friend, who was ready to assist me. The moment we drove away, it was as if a massive weight had lifted—I was free! Admittedly, I left with only the clothes on my back and a bag in hand but the fierce determination to start anew filled my heart.
Life continues to test me in various ways. Currently, I am living in my car, moving between safe spots in Grand Prairie, Texas. It has been difficult to secure full-time work so I manage to do part-time due to some serious health challenges I am facing. I contend with conditions like gastroparesis and other gastrointestinal issues, making me have to wear a diaper at all times due to never knowing or feeling when I need to use bathroom. Very embarrassing. I also fell off a 14 ft roof doing a repair job with my abuser. I landed in the sitting position. The fall inverted the tip of my tailbone so it's beyond uncomfortable and hurts tremendously causing me to walk with a cane. All this is making it hard to establish a stable routine as well. Nevertheless, I persist.
I consider myself fortunate to qualify for free healthcare programs in Texas, which have proven invaluable given the numerous medical appointments I must attend. I am also excited to be taking online courses in Cybersecurity—a promising step toward a brighter future! However, living in my car poses its own difficulties: worries over where to park and lacking easy access to basic necessities loom large, but I hold on to the hope of finding stability with a good roof over my head.
This is where I urgently need your support. Your donations could significantly change my life, assisting me with the following:
- First and last month’s rent, along with a security deposit for a safe apartment.
- Essential needs such as food, gas, and maintaining my car, which currently serves as my only shelter.
- Basic items, including adult diapers, a new cane, and medications that are not fully covered by insurance.
- Support during this transitional phase to help me regain my footing and increase my work hours.
Having come so far on my journey—from plotting my escape to navigating daily life without the familiar comforts I once knew—I am not seeking a handout; rather, I am striving for a hand up, enabling me to live fully, rather than merely surviving. Every contribution counts.
If you are unable to contribute financially, sharing my story is a tremendous help too. Who knows? Your voice might reach someone who can truly make a difference. Thank you immensely for taking the time to listen to my story and considering supporting me. It serves as a reminder that survivors like me are certainly not alone.
With all my heart,
Elizabeth
