Help Jeff Rebuild After His Car Accident
On Thursday night, Jeff was driving home from Pan Theater’s rehearsal when he was hit by another car. While Jeff is thankfully okay physically, his car was totaled in the crash, leaving him without transportation.
The Oakland police and AAA have advised him not to drive the car, and he’s now facing the immediate challenge of covering the costs of a rental car and finding a reliable replacement vehicle.
Who Jeff Is to Us
Jeff has been a cornerstone of Pan Theater for over 15 years as
a performer, teacher, and director. From our early days on Broadway to
our current home at Frank Ogawa Plaza, Jeff has helped countless
students grow their confidence and creativity on stage. His passion
for improv and his dedication to our community have been invaluable.
Now semi-retired, Jeff relies on Pan Theater for his primary income, and this unexpected expense is a significant burden.
How You Can Help
We’re aiming to raise $3,500 to:
- Cover rental car costs while Jeff has his car rebuilt, or finds a new used car.
- Help with insurance deductibles and other expenses not covered by his policy.
- Deal with expenses while he is awaiting insurance settlement.
Jeff has always been there for Pan Theater, keeping our community
alive and thriving through the years. Now, it’s our turn to show him
the same support in his time of need.
Jeff is semi-retired. His only current income is from teaching
at Pan Theater.
Every donation, no matter the amount, will make a difference.
Let’s help Jeff get back on the road and back to doing what he
loves—bringing joy and creativity to our community.
Thank you for your kindness and generosity.

Jeff is exploring his legal options while looking at cars - he may have a line on an affordable used car.

Update from Jeff:
The other driver left things until the
last minute, but finally weighed in to contest my account and
claim
they had the green (they didn't - my best guess is that they
were on
their phone since they didn't swerve or brake). According to
their
claims adjuster that makes it his word against mine and they
won't
pay (not anything). My claims person is waiting to get the
police
report before accepting that. I searched on line for the police
report and can't find it - could it still not be in the system
after
7 weeks? My insistence that the forensics prove I was well into
the
intersection and he should have seen me appears to be falling on
deaf
ears (despite the fact that my agent said this when she saw the
pictures). The insurance company is very slow to respond to any
request for information and I usually have to escalate to a
manager
just to get a response.
I veer between utter discouragement and anger, which is
exhausting. I'm sleeping a lot. Emotionally I still feel
extremely
vulnerable. I don't feel ready to drive - I'm not even ready to
clean my stuff out of the car. I'll need to junk the car and
buy
another car. It seems likely to cost me about 10-13K before
fees and
taxes. It's overwhelming. Physically, I still have some small
aches
and pains, but nothing major as far as anyone can tell. For
that I
am grateful.
People at Pan are being very kind and generous, getting me to
and
from the theater and even helping me run errands and do grocery
shopping. I'm extremely grateful for all the support I'm
receiving. Thank you, everyone, for helping out.
Update: Campaign Success
Here is the latest update from Jeff:
"The other adjustor finally got back to me and said he
hasn't been able to contact the other driver. He said he couldn't do
anything until he heard from them, but I escalated to his manager
and got him to admit that at some point they will make a default judgment."
The fundraising campaign has raised over $3550 to help Jeff. The
original goal was $3500. Jeff is still getting rides/taking the bus as
he deals with the adjustor.
We will be keeping the campaign up for any last minute donations
up until January 9th or until Jeff finds a new used car.
Thanks so much for your donations and sharing the campaign.

Latest Update: The claims adjuster for the other driver finally
got back to me. Apparently the other driver (and the policy holder
who might be the driver's father) have not responded to his calls
and emails. The adjustor's take on it was that there is nothing he
can do without contacting his client. After I ran that up the chain
to his boss, he admitted that if he never hears from the client,
they will make a default judgment on liability (which would allow me
to collect). He would not give me a time line on that. It's all
very frustrating.
I'm being advised by some to take legal action - either through
an attorney on contingency or through small claims court. Kind of
an overwhelming prospect at this point - especially this time of year.
On the positive side, people are being extremely generous, not
only contributing to the fund raiser, but also offering rides and
making sure I get to and from Pan and to the grocery store. I
cannot thank you all enough for all the support.

Update from Jeff
Update from Jeff:
Thank you, everyone, for the tremendous
outpouring of love and support - I cannot express my gratitude to
you all!
I still have some aches and pains, but nothing really serious
physically. Emotionally, I'm still shaken and feeling unsteady.
I'm not ready to get behind the wheel again yet. Friends and
colleagues are very generously helping me out, but I'm going to have
to get a car.
There's still no response from the insurance company. I had my
mechanic friend (Keith at Pan) inspect the car. The passenger doors
cannot be fixed or replaced, so the car will never really be
drivable. My ideal choice of car would be a Honda Civic, manual
transmission with less than 90K miles, but I know that's a stretch
(especially the stick shift) so if you know anyone selling a similar
car, please let me know.

We have raised over $2500 to help Jeff so far. There is still no word
from the insurance company.
Jeff is teaching again, but not driving. He performed last night.
Mechanic's Review of Jeff's Car
Mechanic Review of the Damage:
The car took a detrimental impact to the passenger A-pillar
of the car and impacted the unibody frame. The cost of the repair
exceeds the value of the car. Due to this Jeff will have to get a
new car.
