Jonjo Bright was an aspiring young amateur jockey who suffered a life changing accident while racing at Tyrella Point to Point on 2nd March 2013. Aged just 19, Jonjo sustained a serious spinal injury at the c3 and c4 level, which has left him paralysed from the neck.
The money raised will be added to other funds that have been raised for the Trust and will be used to fund specialist physiotheraphy treatment and to purchase personal and home adaptive equipment that will help to give Jonjo as comfortable and independent a life as possible.
Rob Ireland explained the reason for choosing to support the Jonjo Bright Trust:
"Our Chairman, Wilson Dennison, had a similar accident, but after a long rehabilitation has been able to walk again. We are all so fortunate that we have the choice to walk, run and cycle - some others in life do not".
Having met Jonjo and his mother, Jayne, at the Dennison Commercials headquarters in Ballyclare, the team that undertook the cycle in 2014, also to raise funds for the Trust, were humbled and inspired by Jonjo's positive and motivated attitude - an 85 mile cycle paled into insignificance when hearing of the physical rehabilitation that Jonjo has undertaken and is passionately committed to.
At the time of his accident, Jonjo was fulfilling his lifelong ambition to be a jockey and was showing great promise as a rider. He travelled and competed all over Ireland, Scotland and Wales.
Just like Jonjo's determination to succeed in a career in horse racing, he is now channeling that attitude into his physical condition. He is confident that he will walk again, explaining that advancement in medical research into spinal injuries makes it "an exciting time" for someone with his type of injury. He is fully committed to keeping himself in the best physical condition, regularly attending a specialist gym in England, to ensure that he is ready for the day that a treatment is made available to him. However, all of Jonjo's efforts comes at a cost, which is why the funds are so vital.
Jonjo remains very hopeful for an independent and fulfilling future and with his naturally competitive and determined nature his family and friends have no doubt that he will succeed.
