ABOUT JOSHUA

 My name is Joshua Michael Mendoza, age 11, born on May 15, 2004 in Fresno, California to Rafael and Arica Mendoza. I have two sisters, one older and one younger. My older sister Emily is cheerleader in high school and my younger sister Angelina does JIU JITSU as well.  I attend Herndon Barstow Elementary School and I’m in the 6th grade. My grade point average is 3.8.  I have the same goals and discipline for my grades as I do JIU JITSU. It is as important to me to succeed in school as it is for me to win gold on the mat. My parents have taught me that it is important to care about my education because what I learn in the classroom will carry over into other parts of my life. This past year I wrestled on my school’s wrestling team. I was undefeated and took GOLD in the Central Unified School District Wrestling Championships. In my free time, I like to swim,  go camping, fishing and ride my skateboard.

ABOUT JOSHUA AND BJJ

 I am a Brazilian JIU JITSU athlete. I’ve been training in Brazilian JIU JITSU since I was four years old. I have always been a very small child for my age, so when I was four my dad thought that JIU JITSU would be a perfect sport for me. I am also a very quiet and shy person and he was hoping that a sport like JIU JITSU would build confidence, instill discipline and teach me self defense. BJJ has taught me all of that.  

I hold the rank of Yellow Belt and train with CheckMat, under Leandro Vieira, Marcelo Bonani and Pedro Luiz, out of Fresno California. I compete at under 60lbs and under 70lbs.  I train six days a week and try to participate in at least one tournament a month. I also attend many seminars to help me develop my skills and stay on top of what is new. I am very proud that my success and accomplishments have attracted new students to our academy.

When I step out on the mat to compete, I don’t just go out there to win.  I go out to represent my academy and the sport of BJJ. I treat my competitors with respect.  Sportsmanship is just as important to me as winning. BJJ is in my heart and I plan to always live a BJJ lifestyle.
