Bella was 2&1/2 years old when she was diagnosed with a Portosystemic Shunt. This is a small vein which takes waste food products from the intestines and bypasses the liver - A vein which is present in the growing cat foetus in its mother's womb, but rarely, in some cats it does not close off.

Instead of the waste food products being filtered by her liver, they recirculate back into her bloodstream where they can affect the central nervous system and brain.

Protein cannot be properly broken down and this results in high levels of ammonia and copper, which can cause symptoms of blindness, tremors & seizures.

She is on medications currently to help bind some of the toxins and control seizures but this is not a long term solution. The neurologist said even having one more seizure could be fatal.

There is an operation which involves closing off (`occluding`) the shunt vein with a metal constrictor ring so that the liver can work properly again. It is a potentially risky operation with an 85% success rate but it's her only real chance at a normal full life.

Pet insurers usually do not pay out claims for congenital diseases (conditions they are born with) as they are classed as "pre-existing conditions".

An MRI scan would cost approx £900-1000 & although this would be very useful in order to chart the effects of the toxins on her brain, the most important part is the operation, to close the shunt vein-which we have been quoted £2500+. She also needs prescription food and lactulose, with antibiotics and anti-seizure meds from time to time which we are already paying for.

I want to give her the best chance of recovery & we would be so grateful for any help you could offer.  She is such a bright beautiful soul.  Thank-you
