I am an American, resident in Brazil, 77 years old, retired (more or less), and active still working with community development projects especially with poor (very poor) communities like small farmers and fishermen. In 1999 I suffered a stroke which damaged a heart valve and forced early retirement. My only fixed income is from my Social Security benefits.

Since 2005 I have worked with the Association ABTC-BRASIL, a Brazilian non-profit that I founded (and supported) and am still the president. Our principal interests are projects related to benefit or promote Brazilian family agriculture and/or tourism which benefit members of participating communities and/or assisting projects and private investments of interest to foreignors interested in investing, immigrating or retiring to Brazil. This is a volunteer position and our entire staff (myself included) receive no salary,

Mid-March this year I was hospitalized for tests on my heart. (This done I needed further tests stateside fairly quickly). This proposed trip, besides the tests, has several additional objectives.

I have been telling people about Brazil for years in my various blogs, Yahoo groups and other sites. It has been a fun hobby for me. But now, I can no longer look at this as a hobby and need to reorganize efforts so that I can get more done for more people.

1. I needed to interview several possible new directors to assist our projects. Two were selected and now I am preparing the documents to accept them.
2. My daughter, Brazilian/American, graduated from Texas A & M May.11th and I was able to be there.
3. I needed to renew several stateside documents necessary while there.which had to done in person and authenticated by the Brazilian consul..
4. Certain supplies which could only be obtained stateside and we need t had hoped to possibly carry some on my return, Unable to do that because of lack of funds we now need to order and have shipped to Brazil.
5. The main objectives of this trip was to to reorganize my life, health, and raise funding for our Brazilian projects. (besides seeing my daughter graduate)

When overseas citizens move to a foreign country, life can be a bit challenging, certainly at first. Having a support group or some source of information on life in that country is one way to help expats settle down and feel more at home.

A SELF-SUSTAINING RESILIENT COMMUNITY I was able to visit the United States thanks to support from old friends and supporters and still in desperate need of some additional help to pay the budgeted expenses. I attended my daughter`s graduation ceremony Saturday night (5/11).
