15 years ago my Grandma was diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease - the most common form of dementia. For the following 7 years my Grandad devoted every day to care for her at home until she was admitted to a local care home for 24 hour care in 2005. The nurses there were very caring and hard-working. My Grandad visited her every day to feed her a meal or just sit by her bed side, whether she recognised him or not.
In June 2012 my Grandma sadly passed away after a long battle with Alzheimer's spanning nearly 20 years. Throughout her illness it was heart breaking to see her mental and physical deterioration. As Alzheimer's affects a person’s memory it was particularly hard to come to terms with the loss of recognition of her family, not least her children, grandchildren, and husband.
The Alzheimer's Society provides brilliant care and invaluable research for the individuals, families, and carers of the 800,000 people that suffer from dementia in the UK. This number is set to rise to 1 million by 2021 and therefore every donation is essential to maintain the brilliant work they do.

I began playing tennis at Thornhill Tennis Club when I was 8 years old and for the past 12 years I have been coached and played at the club all year round. We have junior, intermediate and adult teams who play in the local area, and coaching sessions for over 30 juniors thanks to the dedication of our coach Tawona Tee Moyo. During the past few years the condition of the courts has deteriorated and they will need to be resurfaced. As Thornhill Tennis Club is a small club we have struggled for funding and I would like to be able to contribute towards this by holding a fundraising event. Despite it being a small club, it has a large junior section with many children from the local area and it would be a tragedy if we were unable to keep the club running in the future. Tennis is a big part of my life and this would not be the case without Thornhill Tennis Club. I would hate to see my generation be the last to grow up through the club and hopefully this fundraising event will contribute towards a brighter future for Thornhill Tennis Club.
