My mom died in December 2012. Her biggest concern in the past few years was what would happen to her animals when she died I promised her I would take care of her animals. I can't do that unless I can keep her house, and I can't keep her house unless I pay off the balance of her reverse mortgage. I haven’t had a full time job since 2008, and for the past couple of years most of my time was spent looking after my mother, so I can’t finance the debt myself. I need help to help the animals. Please.

Every animal Mom ever gave homes to was either adopted from a shelter or taken in from someone who was unable to keep them. She taught all us kids to adopt, too. In the last 10 years, she took in 2 stray kittens. She also adopted 2 poodles rescued from a life tied under a porch by the SPCA. When they first came home, they stayed under the sofa. Now, after years in this loving home, they are now thriving and sociable, and will let you pat them for a little bit.

Collectively, Mom and us kids have rescued hundreds of animals. I want to honor that legacy and keep her house and animals. My 626 square foot home can’t house my 2 dogs and a cat, plus her 3 dogs and 3 cats. It’s too small, and my allergies would go nuts in those close quarters. Her timid, once-neglected poodles are thriving in their home. Her cats have their own private entrance and choose to spend most of their time outside. Her yard has a secure fence and plenty of room for 5 dogs to run. There’s enough space to accommodate the animals AND my allergies.

But I need to pay off that reverse mortgage. There are also repairs to make. Some of the animals she brought home thought the house was delicious; one pair of dog brothers tried to chew through walls to challenge each other. The house took a beating, but Mom never even considered taking any animal back to a shelter.

I’ve been working hard to get the house in shape to sell it – but I don’t want to turn my back on the animals, the cats especially. Please, help me fix the house and pay off the mortgage. It’s a tall order; the goal for this campaign represents only 10% of the amount owed. But it’s a start. Thanks for reading – and enjoy the pictures of the animals to whom we, collectively over the years, have given forever homes.
