Peter Conroy from Milton Malbay in Clare has just received confirmation that he is among the top five surfers vying for the World Billabong XXL Ride of the Year (Tube) award. He is the only European still in contention for the €5,000 first prize at the Awards with the winners being announced at the Billabong XXL Big Wave Awards at the Grove Theatre in Anaheim, California on May 3rd, 2013.

Peter caught his award-nominated wave off Mullaghmore Head in Sligo back in January. His entire ride was captured by photographer, Roo McCrudden who is also nominated as the contributing photographer.

Peter, who works in the Dublin Fire Service and is a member of both the Irish Tow and Surf Rescue Club and the West Coast Surf Club, said he is delighted to have made it this far, adding “The other nominees are all full time surfers with big sponsors. I have a job and only get to surf in my free time.”

For this reason Peter & Roo are seeking any help no matter how small or big to realise their goal of attending the awards ceremony in Los Angeles. This would help with things like flights and accommodation. The the lads, and others in the surf industry feel they have a very real chance of taking the top spot. To come from Ireland, a relative unknown in the surfing world a few years ago, and win an award like this ahead of the world's best would be unbelievable. It would also be a great promotion for Ireland as a surf destination.

Any donations to help Peter & Roo realise this would be much appreciated and can be made by clicking the 'Donate' link above to make a contribution through the Irish Tow Surf Rescue Club.
