Hi! My name is Ava and I’m a third year medical student. With new changes to government funding options and student line of credit limitations, I’m hoping to fundraise some money for help with my medical school tuition.
A little about me: I was born in Tehran, Iran. Due to the political climate and Christian prosecution, my mom fled with me when I was very young and escaped Iran. Growing up I saw her work as a Physician in a refugee camp in Turkey where we were staying. Despite my young age, I’ve known since then that I wanted to be just like her and become a physician one day to be able to help others, especially marginalized and underserved populations.
Despite my mother’s best efforts, growing up with a single mom who was forced to flee Iran and move to a new country as a child was not easy. However, it allowed me to gain a life understanding that I know has helped me build resilience, empathy, and a better understanding of the real challenges immigrants face, something I hope I will be able to help my future patients with.
Becoming a physician has been a lifelong goal of mine that despite the many adversities- including financial struggles - I’ve faced on my journey to this goal, I have and will remain resilient. I’ve been able to excel in medical school, performing in the top 15 percentile of my class, and have received various awards for clinical skills and academics, as well as for my community and leadership work in my medical school.
With the cost of each semester being 30 thousand dollars, and the changes to funding options - such as removal of OSAP for out of province schooling, LOC guidelines changes, and Iranian war limiting ability for familial aid - any amount donated can help in allowing me to continue my lifelong goal of becoming a physician and I would be endlessly grateful.
Upon graduation in March of 2028, I plan on specializing in family medicine and emergency medicine. I hope to work in communities where I can help marginalized groups as my mom has done. I further hope to be able to help fellow Iranians from a culturally understanding lens as well as Iranian youth who may also one day wish to become physicians.
It is only through the help of my friends, family, and community that I have been able to get this far in my journey and one day when I graduate, I plan on contributing back to my community and others as much as possible to pass on this great kindness.
