Ronda Sessa hasn't added a story.
This is my daughter and her best friend of 11 years. Actually Graham is, pretty much, her only friend. My daughter is an introvert and suffers from anxiety. She takes online college courses because she finds it impossible to sit in a class full of people. Graham has always been her friend to turn to. To lift her spirits, to talk to, to hang out with. To say she loves him is an understatement. She loves him so much he hasn’t had a saddle on in years. He’s her giant baby. He’s her world. Her world came crashing down recently. We got a call that Graham was down. The vet said we either euthanize him or get him to the hospital. Imagine those two options, let her best friend go or try to save him not knowing the cost. Once at the hospital the Doctor said euthanize or surgery. We HAD to try. Graham came out of surgery and all was well. After three days they said he could go home. The night before he was to go home he started refluxing. His small intestine wasn’t working. Again we were faced with letting him go or more surgery. The Doctor told me “In cases like this when owners chose euthanasia, after necropsy, I found that most could have survived” Once again how could we not save him. We couldn’t imagine life without him. Surgery was successful and the next day the Doctor said he was happy we did it. Of course WE were so happy. Two days later Graham was refluxing even worse. (horses don’t vomit, the fluid builds up in their stomachs) They were pulling 7 liters every two hours. There was NOTHING else to be done and he was tired and had no more fight to give. I cried and whispered in his ear as he left us. I can’t even describe the pain of losing him. We were at the hospital with him everyday, morning until night. It was an hour and twenty minute drive, each way. We did it everyday for ten days. We didn’t want him to feel alone in a scary hospital where he was constantly being messed with. We wanted him to know he was loved and to give him the will to get better.
We don’t have a house with property. I’ve worked all these years to support Graham. He was boarded. Of course if you can’t afford an animal you shouldn’t have one. I could handle his boarding and yearly vaccines and his farrier but not many people are ready for a catastrophic illness/injury that brings extreme bills. Not many people are prepared to have a huge financial hit like that, and most of us would not be able to absorb it easily. That doesn’t mean you aren’t supposed to have animals in your life. Best friends.
So, after 10 days in an equine hospital, and surgery, my debt is even more than I expected. Not only are we dealing with this unbearable loss now I have an enormous hospital debt. I have never done a fundraiser before but I implore you for your help. It doesn’t have to be a lot. If enough people would donate $5-10 it would add up. I donate to animal rescues all the time. Now I find myself needing help. THANK YOU.
