As a seeker of new and difficult challenges, this year (2016) I’ve outdone myself. I have signed up to do the 3 Peaks Challenge in under 24 hours with a dedicated team from work (Aol) on the 20th May and on the 31st July (my birthday weekend) I will be cycling 100 miles around London and up the brutal Box Hill in the Prudential Ride London. If that isn’t enough I’ve already done one half marathon and I have another two coming up AND I’m hoping to attempt a triathlon.
Normally I would do this for my own personal challenge but since joining Aol they are a part of a fantastic charity called Free The Children which I’ve already had the privilege of being a part of when I volunteered at WE Day in February at Wembley Stadium. Since getting on board I’ve felt inspired to help in any way possible which is why I’m taking on these new challenges.
Free The Children was set by an inspired 12 year old Craig Kielburger around 20 years ago and carries the power of WE globally, empowering communities to lift themselves out of poverty through our holistic, sustainable international development model, Adopt a Village.
They aim to start and complete their work within each community in 7 years, leaving them with tools across 5 core pillars:
Education | Through building schools and training teachers now girls within the community have dedicated girls schools where they can board. This allows children from many different villages have access to education.
Clean Water & Sanitation | Providing people with education on how to keep their homes clean and building bore holes for the community to have clean water
Health | Free the Children have built medical centres in remote areas as well as training up medical staff. The money Team Kenya 2014 raised actually went to help build a surgical wing at the Baraka Health Centre in Kenya.
Agriculture & Food Security | Educating Mamas on how to grow their own food and helping to raise animals.
Alternative Income & Livelihood | Providing locals with animals that can provide an income, I managed to see some of the bees they keep and sell the honey from, providing an income.
