NoMore HomelessPets Ft Laud hasn't added a story.
"I'm Sophie.
I'm a Pocket Dog which means that I am a really small version of my breed. I'm a very lovely mix of American bulldog, Boston terrier and Staffordshire terrier, which is what gives me my beautiful brindle coloring. You probably all know me from the No More Homeless Pets Rescue facebook page. I've been featured on there a couple times because I have a very sad story - at least, the first part was sad. Just lately things have been really looking up. But in case you don't already know my tale, here's a recap.
I was brought in to the county shelter by a Good Samaritan who was going to adopt me but then changed his mind. I'm not sure why but I think he wasn't really able to have a dog at the time. Because I had been out on my own for awhile, everyone thought I'd be good at fending for myself but I wasn't. In fact I had no aptitude for it whatsoever. I wasn't eating properly and I couldn't find anywhere clean to sleep so my skin just went downhill from there and I developed a really serious case of something the veterinarian called Demodex. The good thing was that it's non-contagious so at least I still got to hang with my friends. But boy, was it ever itchy! It drove me crazy sometimes. Whenever my favorite shelter volunteers would come pet me, my skin was so raw they would see blood on their hands after. I think it made them sad but they always covered well for my benefit. And however much it hurt to be petted, it hurt much more not to. I love to feel human touch. After a while I also got very sick, I was off my food, lost weight and ran a really high fever. Then one day, I heard I was going to No More Homeless Pets Rescue and if I had been well enough to jump I would've jumped for joy!
I went straight to the veterinarian's office, where I stayed in the Serious room for awhile. This is where everything is very sterile and clean and I couldn't play with other dogs for a while because my skin would get sore. When I would go outside my feet would bleed when we walked. But gradually I got a little better and now I am in the General area, where I can socialize a little, I can go potty outside and feel the grass all scrunchy under my paws - it's awesome!
I still have a fair way to go but my story is getting happier by the day, don't you think? My medical bills are pretty high but I know everyone at the rescue is committed to me and they always tell me that they love me and I am worth it. I even have a Meet & Greet lined up in a few weeks!
I feel much better, and it's all thanks to people like you who care about me. Thank you for being so caring and for your donation, it truly makes a big giant difference.
xoxo Sophie
