Since my sophomore year of high school, I have always had a dream of marching drum corps. Drum corps is an activity that is similar to marching band, including the hornline, percussion section, and color guard. I was introduced to a production by an all-male corps called The Cavaliers that was entitled "Mad World." From that point onward I had a very specific goal in mind: one day, I would be out there marching at Lucas Oil Stadium with that very same corps. For ever since then I have put in hours and hours of constant, painstaking practice to achieve my goals. In November of last year, I made the trip with my family to Rosemont, IL to make my dreams a reality. I auditioned for a position in the color guard that weekend and came out with not only a spot in the 2013 production, but also training from world class coaches with years of quality teaching experience in their hands.
What distinguishes the Cavaliers from other drum corps of their stature is not only the high level of skill and precision with which they execute their music, marching, and performance, but the fraternal history of the corps that dates back all the way to the year 1948. As a brotherhood 150 members strong, we will spend anywhere from 8-10 hours each day learning, practicing, and rehearsing a fifteen minute show that requires incredible amounts of talent and endurance. The corps and I will be travelling across the country, performing in a new venue for thousands of fans about 4-5 nights each week, all culminating at the the DCI World Championships Finals performance at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis. This experience for most members costs a little over $2,000, but for a first year member like me, it costs nearly $3,000.
So I am reaching out to you all: my friends, family, and fellow fans of drum corps. Your donation goes farther than you may think. The Cavaliers utilize a caravan of 5 charter buses to transport the corps, staff, and volunteers, and with gas prices on the rise, fueling them becomes expensive. Each member is fed three square meals and a healthy snack every single day. Each member also has their own uniform and their own instrument or set of equipment. Each contest also has an entry fee, and they are far from cheap. The list of expenses could go on and on, but as you can see, the value of your dollar is spread out to its fullest use.
If every friend on my Facebook donated $5, I would have almost twice the amount I need for my dues this summer. Please thoughtfully consider donating to making this summer the start to an incredible four year long journey with the Cavaliers Drum & Bugle Corps.
