THANKS EVERYONE!! This fundraiser is now complete. In a short amount of time, we raised $3,463 that went directly to this soldier to help his family. He'll soon be back home to begin the recovery process. Your support has provided needed assistance and a huge morale boost to him and his family, and he's promised to pay this forward in any way he can.

ORIGINAL POST:
On Oct 30, a soldier of mine here in Afghanistan learned that his mother, grandparents, and cat were stranded on a second-floor rear apartment on Rockaway Beach Blvd that was on fire and surrounded by seawater in the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy. Then the phone cut off.

Hours later, and after much worrying and searching for information, he learned they had escaped (including the cat) and were safe in an emergency shelter. But he and his family lost everything in the fire and flood. He was smart and has an insurance policy, and the family will be eligible for disaster assistance. But until all of the assessments and red tape go through, they have nothing to go on but a young soldier's paycheck.

I'm asking concerned folks in my Facebook universe to consider giving a few dollars to give this soldier and his family some help as they begin the recovery process. He's worked hard during these months of deployment, and he has a bright future. But I know he and his family can use the boost about now.

This is totally unofficial and a personal request. I've set up an account that I can easily transfer to his through our mutual bank (USAA). There are some fees with using PayPal and FundRazr, but part of my own donation to him is to underwrite these fees to ensure that 100% of what you donate gets directly to him so he can help his family.

Or if you prefer, you can message me directly and I can provide account information for you to make a direct transfer instead of using PayPal.

I'll keep this open for maybe a week or two. Thanks for reading through. I hope you'll consider helping.
