My name is Atsushi Sugawara / @@ushi , @usi .
a manga artist with over twenty-three years of experience in Japan.
I am currently based in Victoria, Canada.
For many years, I have been creating stories through images.
This project is a personal one—
a story I have carried with me for a long time.
— Story —
When she was only an infant, her voice was stolen.
Then she lost her youth and her face —
in exchange for immense magical power.
Vella — The Witch Without a Voice
is an illustrated story created for teenagers and older readers.
It follows a witch’s child named Vella,
When she was only an infant, her voice was stolen
and could not use magic like other witches.
As she grows,
Vella becomes an apprentice to a great witch of the Western Forest.
There, she loses her youth and her face—
in exchange for half of the witch’s immense magical power.
This story is about loss, exchange,
and what it means to move forward
after something precious has been taken.

This book is planned as a 36-page, full-color illustrated work,
positioned between a picture book and a graphic novel.
The story is told quietly,
with minimal text and carefully composed images
that allow readers to feel the emotions between the lines.
The PDF edition is scheduled for release on May 1,
with printed copies to follow.
I am running this crowdfunding campaign to bring this book into its final form.
