On Saturday, July 11, Yuri Sakano was biking to work and crashed while going down a big hill in Whitehorse, Yukon. Yuri is an avid and experienced cyclist. The cause of the crash remains unknown.
Yuri was airlifted to Vancouver, and her partner Cat Campbell flew to
be with her. Cat was picking up their new puppy in Terrace, BC at the
time and was able to get to Vancouver quickly. However, because Cat
was travelling, she has very little with her in Vancouver, and is
unsure how long they will be there.
Yuri is in for a very long and difficult recovery. It's unclear
how much cognitive and physical abilities she will regain.
Unfortunately, Yuri can't move her right arm or right leg. It is too
soon to know if this paralysis is permanent or not. This injury will
have major long-term effects. Both Yuri and Cat will be facing a long,
tough road ahead, and shouldn't also have to bear a financial burden
in addition to this medical crisis.
Yuri's family is in Japan, and has been notified. However, with Covid restrictions, travel is uncertain.
Yuri is in Canada on a working visa/sponsorship visa. This injury
places her visa status/application for residency in jeopardy. Cat has
been advised by an immigration consultant to hire a lawyer.
All funds raised will go towards:
- Incurred expenses in Vancouver (purchasing clothing, food,
& accommodations - which are only partially covered by Yukon
health)
- compensation for lost wages for Yuri and Cat (as her
medical escort)
- Fees for an immigration lawyer
- cost of
private rehabilitation, public health system only provides 3 months of rehab
- Continuing care facility costs in the future
- A specialized wheelchair, therapy equipment, cognitive therapy iPad application license fees etc
- Travel expenses for Yuri's family (when/if they're permitted to
travel to Canada)
