Missy Dun hasn't added a story.
Hi! My name is Kenna and my dog's name is Koda Beans.
Koda was just released from the Emergency Veterinary Clinic in Burlington, Vermont.
She's only 3 years old, and I rescued her from the local shelter back in November of 2014.
Since she has been in my care, she has only improved in all aspects of life and has bonded with me strongly.
When I adopted her, she was super under-weight and malnourished. She was suffering from a bad urinary tract infection, that the Onion RIver Animal Hospital estimated she must have had for over a year, based on the size of the crystals found in her urine. She was also covered in her own feces, which had hardened into her hair. She was abandoned at the Central Vermont Humane Society, and I fell in love on sight.
Eight months later, she is the appropriate weight, she only eats the best and gets taken on adventures all the time. She is a healthy and happy girl...
Well, until Thursday July 30th, 2015 :(
She went for her usual run, a run that she has done many times before. An hour after coming home, she stood up from her normal post run nap, vomited and then collapsed. She was immediately taken to the Onion River Animal Hospital. She lost control of her bowels upon arrival, had extremely dilated pupils, and was clearly out of sorts.
She has received the best care and support. It was discovered that she was experiencing acute thrombocytopenia. Which means she was lacking platelets, which are very important and are required for clotting blood.
She started showing signs of internal bleeding. There was blood in her vomit and stool.
She received 8 transfusions of plasma.
I just couldn't give up on her.
But the cost of care is out of control; already having spent $7,000 to save her.
And more appointments to take her to, in order to ensure her good health.
Yet nothing is for sure. Ever.
I was told that Koda wasn't going to live if they stopped the blood transfusions.
And all the veterinarians ensured me that it wasn't anything they or I could have forseen.
The vet suspects that she must have had heat stroke in the past. Once you suffer from a heat stroke you are then much more susseptable to them in the future. There's no way of knowing what she went through before we met.
She is home now. And being able to kiss her head and play around in the house again, is such a gift!
Alas...
I am a mere student/bartender who lives alone, with her dog, and guinea pigs...! :) And money can be a fickle mistress.
If you know how hard it is to have to say goodbye, and hold onto a glimmer of hope, I know you will understand why I chose to spend so much money in the hopes of saving my loved one.
Koda and I found eachother at the Central Vermont Humane Society and fell in love on the spot. She has been such a bright light in my life and has given me even more purpose on this earth. I love her more than words can explain. And I am so happy that she is home.
Thank you so very much for your attention!
Sincerely,
Koda's super-happy/financially stuck Mom
Kenna Renee Donovan
