Send Tammy to Seminary

My name is Tabitha  (Tammy) Hockley.  I am a United Methodist seminarian.  I answered my call to enter the ministry 12 years after I fist received it.  I entered college knowing I loved music in the church, but thought I only wanted to volunteer singing in and eventually leading church music programs. I opted in getting my bachelors degree in Music Education and spent the next 9 years happily working in the school system while volunteering at church, teaching Sunday School, directing the Christmas program and directing the choir.

Then my husband answered his call and headed to Seminary and we moved across the country to the amazing Pacific School of Religion in Berkeley, CA.  I fell in love with the community and immediately joined by church choir, but found that I was meant for so much more.  Seminary became such a large part of my life that when I applied my pastor threw up his hands, thanked the Lord, and quickly wrote a recommendation.  When I was accepted to the Master of Divinity Program the most common response was, "I thought you were already a student".

Now because of medical issues and having two full-time students in the house my calling is in danger of being postponed yet again.  I have not given up on scholarships and financial aid, but I have an immediate need or I will not be able to register for the classes that start in February.  Every contributor will help me reach my goal of being a progressive female voice in the ranks of the United Methodist clergy.

How much you ask?

Graduate school is not cheap, but I have worked hard to get where I am. I worked 50 hours a week when my spouse started seminary and maintained a 30 hour work week and a 3.55 grade-point average last semester.  My spouse has in internship and a part time job in ministry, but due to medical problems we are still struggling to make ends meet.  Here is a break down of my bill.

Current Charges                                         18,969.52
Student Payments                                       1,780.00
Financial Aid Payments                               12,999.00
Total Payments & Deferred Amounts          14,779.00
Total Amount Currently Due                        4,190.52I need 100 people to donate $40 each to get me into next semester.  I've set my goal for only $3000 because I know that if I can find 75% of the funds I can work with the school to make payments on the remainder of the bill.  That's only $30 each for 100 people. Any amount that exceeds my goal will first go toward purchasing books for the semester and then to paying the remainder. I fully expect to well exceed my goal and any remaining funds will be donated to other students in financial need.If I am unable to reach my goal I will defer my degree for the summer and begin fundraising for the fall semester.  I hear the call and nothing so little as finances will stop me.

What do you get out of it?

The world is severely lacking in progressive voices within the Christian Church.  I'm not your stereotypical Christian defined by what I don't do. I believe that as Christians we should be actively involved in helping the poor, speaking for the voiceless, and making the world a better place for all people from all walks of life not because we will make more converts, but because people are worthy of our love for simply being people. Your contribution will allow me to train a new generation of people who work toward a better world.

Not only will you support my education, but the education of every congregate I serve.  I am a teacher and I know that I will never be rich and famous or make the cover of Time Magazine, but I will serve humanity with every fiber of my being.

So you don't have $30.

That's ok.  I understand that people in the faith community have already extended their donations to other charities, but you know people who haven't.  Take my story to your pastor, priest, rabbi, family... Any amount will help me reach my goal.  Send an email to people in your community that may be interested.  Post on facebook, get the tweet out, follow my blog and repost.  Indiegogo has great share tools available to use.

Have you heard your call. Send your support today and keep the faith.
