On Oct 17, 2013, Julie Keim filed a complaint with the Colorado Secretary of State alleging violations of the Colorado Fair Campaign Practice Act and the Campaign Finance Laws. What started as a simple complaint, escalated into Julie Keim, a parent, having to hire an attorney after DCSD hired an expensive outside attorney. Julie had initially planned to represent herself against the District's staff attorney in what she understood to be an informal hearing with an Administrative Law Judge. What started as a simple complaint turned into two days of hearings with many exhibits and more than ten witnesses, and the costs are now just under $25,000. With your help, we have raised almost $12,000, but we are still short of our goal.

On December 24, 2013, the Administrative Law Judge found DCSD violated the Colorado Constitution and Fair Campaign Practices Act when it used public funds to pay for a biased report written to intentionally influence the election. Undaunted, the district has threatened to appeal the judge's ruling, creating even more use of taxpayer dollars to defend their own illegal actions. This will result in additional attorney's fees to fight the appeal. In addition, the district has threatened to try to collect its high-priced attorney's fees from Ms. Keim. Ms. Keim believes that the District is sending a message to all citizens that they are above the law and will cause great cost to anyone who dares question the legality of their actions.

Please help us continue this fight to ensure that taxpayer dollars intended to educate our children are used for only that purpose, and not to forward a failing agenda of corporate education reform. Make sure you understand the facts and not the political propoganda that is espoused by the district leadership. Ask a teacher, principal, parent or student about whether things are really working in Douglas County School District.
