THE SHORT VERSION
Hey guys, thanks for stopping by my campaign! I'm Dave Revere. I
volunteer with children along the central Thai/Burma border area.
On November 10, I'm climbing up the north face of Long's Peak in
order to raise money to purchase vaccines for the Mon National Health
Committee, a non-profit organization which vaccinates internally
displaced Mon children and mothers in Burma who receive no other
health care services. I'm asking you to share ownership in this
life-saving program by purchasing elevation on my climb for $1 a foot.
This is your invitation to connect yourself to these little ones and
help us reach an area that no one else is. Even if it's small, would
you consider a sacrifice for the sake of these kids? Giving up six
premium coffees, for example, would buy twenty feet of my climb!
This four-year-old vaccination program reaches approximately
3,000 children and pregnant women in 26 remote, jungle villages near
the Thai/Burma border. There is currently ZERO funding for next year's
outreach program. So, the primary goal here is to raise more than
$15,000, which will be enough to purchase most of the vaccines needed
for the kids we're hoping to reach for 2014. MNHC also wants to expand
to other villages currently receiving no vaccinations if enough
awareness and funding can be raised. We need the funds by early
October in order to place the order for vaccines in time for the start
of the program.
Last year's UNICEF survey reports that 66 out of 1,000 children
under five die in Burma, mostly from preventable diseases. This number
is significantly higher in areas where there is no access to health
care. Remote areas such as the villages for internally displaced Mon
people which this program serves.
Click the GIVE button and pay securely either through your
paypal account or with a credit card. The listed recipient is
Neohumanist Foundation - Baan Dada Children's Home. This is the
organization which purchases these vaccines for MNHC, and all
donations made through this website will be designated for such.
Please consider NOT donating anonymously, as I'd like to thank
you and put your name on my own custom climbing bandana! It's my way
of taking you with me in spirit and naming your ownership of this
climb and these children's futures.
Ok, that was the short version. Now read on for more details...
WHAT I'M DOING
I love climbing mountains. I love the world stretching out below
me. I feel like it belongs to me, and I to it. In fact, I first became
enthralled with Burma when I viewed it from the top of a mountain I
climbed on the Thai border.
I feel it's only natural to challenge myself to climb another,
much higher mountain in order to raise money for this life-saving
program.
Longs Peak is a famous 14,259 footer in Colorado. I'll do a
technical climb up the north face over two days. It will be by far the
hardest mountain I've climbed. Rest assured that by purchasing feet on
my climb, you'll motivate me when oxygen and stamina fails.
I became involved in this vaccination program while volunteering
at a remote orphanage on the Thai/Burma border. One of the Mon medics
who administers the vaccinations befriended me, and I asked to go
along on one of the several annual trips they make each year. This led
to more trips, each one deeper into Burma. I was driving the truck,
preparing syringes, holding crying babies and playing jungle soccer
with kids every chance I could. More importantly, I developed a
greater understanding for this area of South East Burma and the
funding crisis this particular program faces each year when not enough
money is raised to purchase the needed vaccinations.
I saw first hand the kind of life-saving impact this program is
having. Last year, I saw the consequences of a shortfall in funding
for this program and spoke at length with the deputy director of the
MNHC about the opportunity for expanding this program to reach more
children. This drove me to commit to fundraising this year.
I'm targeting this specific amount of money because that's how
much we need to purchase most of the the vaccines needed for 2014's
program. If you have any questions about numbers or breakdowns of
costs, I'd be happy to email you more details.
WHAT'S AT STAKE?
A 2012 UNICEF study found that 66 out of 1,000 children under
five die in Burma. Mostly from preventable diseases. The report also
states that this number is significantly higher in areas where there
is no access to health care. Remote areas such as the villages for
internally displaced Mon people which this program serves.
Political instability forced many Burmese minorities such as the
Mon people to relocate near border areas. They lack many basic
resources, including medical health care services.
Basic vaccination against preventable fatal diseases
(tuberculosis, polio, measles, mumps, rubella, diphtheria, pertussis,
tetanus, and hepatitis b) and de-worming treatment of children,
tetanus vaccination for pregnant women were not available until a
vaccination program was initiated in 2009. The program is administered
once a year by the Mon National Health Committee. MNHC is currently
the only organization providing health care services to these
Internally Displaced People. Since MNHC receives no government
funding, the program is entirely funded through donations.
Mon children under five and pregnant women are the beneficiaries
of this program which reaches out to 26 remote, jungle villages. MNHC
provides trained local medics to administer the vaccines and keeps a
record of the children vaccinated.
WHAT YOU CAN DO
This is the awesome part. I'm selling elevation on my 14,259
foot climb up Mt. Longs for ONE buck a foot! When you purchase
elevation, you'll actually be purchasing life saving vaccines for
these precious children! Let me give you the specifics.
All of this money goes to purchase the vaccines needed to cover
next year's outreach program. That's full vaccination for about 3,000
children from tuberculosis, polio, measles, mumps, rubella,
diphtheria, pertussis, tetanus, and hepatitis b!
Here's how much it costs us to buy a single dose of vaccine:
OPV - $0.55
BCG - $0.87
DTP - $0.81
MMR -
$5.56
Tetanus - $0.58
Hep B - $5.82
So, purchasing ONE foot of my climb can cover one diphtheria or
tuberculosis vaccine. A buck nearly covers two polio or tetanus vaccines!
Want to know how much of each vaccine we're buying, or what the
specific numbers are about boosters and who needs them? Email me and
I'll send you more details.
But here's the bottom line. This program dies if the funds
aren't raised. These children, as a result, will be at a much higher
risk to these killer diseases if we aren't able to purchase the
vaccines for them. There isn't another agency helping them right now.
There isn't a big grant coming in. That's why I'm doing this. There's
this fundraising effort. That's it!
That's why I'm inviting you to claim your piece of this
life-saving effort. Connect yourself to these children. Purchase
elevation for vaccination. Thousands of feet are for sale! I'm asking
you to share ownership in this climb so that these little ones get the
treatment they need. Let's reach these children - our children. No one
else is.
Thanks so much for taking the time to learn about this program!
